Because of its long acquired experience in invasive species for ships’ ballast water, MEA-nl is able to perform similar analyes in other sectors.
For the European shellfishing sector for example, the European and regional regulations require the disinfection of process water. This is to prevent the introduction and the spread of invasive species via commercially cultured shellfish species such as oysters and mussels. In practice, this means optimal operation of the quarantaine system of a shellfish company by treatment with filtration and UV or another technology.
The analyses to verify this operation are very similar to those commonly used for ships’ ballast water. MEA-nl is currently working to make our sampling and analytical services available for this industry. The regional quarantaine regulations in The Netherlands can be found here.
